One of the most common questions we receive from pathologists, dermatopathologists, and Mohs surgeons is how to add a polarizer or analyzer to an Olympus BX40 or BX50 microscope—especially when the microscope does not have a six-place nosepiece with an analyzer slot.
The good news is that in many cases, adding polarization is much simpler than most people expect. Below, we’ll walk through the most common setups, when each option makes sense, and what hardware is required.
The Simple Drop-In Method (No Six-Place Nosepiece Required)
If your goal is basic polarization for routine work, there is an easy and effective solution that does not require a six-place nosepiece.
How This Setup Works
-
The analyzer is placed underneath the viewing head
-
The polarizer is installed above the dust glass in the illumination column
-
No permanent modification is required
-
This works well for many BX40 and BX50 microscopes that lack the analyzer slot
This method is fast, affordable, and ideal for users who want polarization without major changes to their microscope configuration.

When You Need Congo Red or a Dedicated Analyzer Slot
If you are performing Congo red staining or require a UGAN analyzer, the setup becomes more specific.
In these cases:
-
The analyzer typically needs to be in a dedicated slot
-
You may want the ability to insert or remove the analyzer without disassembling the microscope
-
A six-place nosepiece or a KPA riser is usually required
Understanding the Six-Place Nosepiece Challenge on the BX40
Unlike some other BX-series microscopes, the BX40 does not come standard with a dovetail for mounting a six-place nosepiece. This is where many users get stuck.
The Solution: Add a Nosepiece Dovetail Adapter
To install a six-place nosepiece on a BX40, you must first add a dovetail adapter. This adapter allows the nosepiece to mount correctly and enables the use of analyzer slots and advanced polarization accessories.
You can find the dovetail adapter here:

Adding the U-GAN Analyzer and U-KPA Polarizing Attachment
Once the dovetail adapter and six-place nosepiece are installed, you can add the appropriate polarization components.

This configuration is ideal if you:
-
Perform Congo red staining
-
Need a dedicated analyzer slot
-
Want the option to remove the analyzer when not in use

Which Option Is Right for You?
-
Routine polarization and simplicity:
Drop-in analyzer under the head with a polarizer above the dust glass -
Congo red or advanced polarization:
Six-place nosepiece with dovetail adapter and U-KPA / U-GAN components
Both approaches are valid—the right choice depends on how often you use polarization and whether you need to insert or remove the analyzer regularly.
