Inside the Lab: How We Bring Microscopes Back to Life (Better Than New)

Inside the Lab: How We Bring Microscopes Back to Life (Better Than New)

The Munday Scientific Refurbishment Process

At Microscope Marketplace, we don’t just sell microscopes—we revive them. Every scope that lands on one of our benches goes through a meticulous, hands-on refurbishing process by a crew of techs who love what they do—and it shows. From start to finish, we treat every microscope like it’s going into our own lab.

Whether it's an Olympus BX, a Nikon Eclipse, or a Leica DM, here’s how we give each microscope a second life that's often better than its first.

Step 1: Electrical Check + Deep Cleaning

Before we grab a single wrench, we power up the microscope to check all electrical components. We test the socket, power board, switches, and make sure the light source is firing up correctly.

From there, it's all about cleanliness. Every inch is scrubbed inside and out. Old grease, dust, and mystery gunk? Gone. If it's not sparkling, it doesn't move on.

Step 2: Rebuilding the Focus Mechanism

This is where Scott Munday shines. Scott is a master mechanic with decades of experience—and the focus mechanism is his specialty. The Z-drive is what raises and lowers your stage. We disassemble it completely, clean out the old grease, inspect every gear, and apply fresh factory grease to ensure that buttery-smooth movement.

Danny Duncan, our other master mechanic, often tags in to assist and double-check tolerances. Precision is everything here.

Step 3: Head Rebuild and Alignment

Most people overlook the head, but not us. Danny is usually on this job—he meticulously disassembles the binocular or trinocular head, cleans every mirror, and realigns everything to factory spec. Proper alignment ensures your image stays sharp across the field of view.

Meanwhile, Chad Potts, although primarily our sales wizard, is a true jack-of-all-trades. He knows this process inside and out and often hops in to rebuild a head or diagnose an optical issue. He’s helped labs across the country pick the perfect scope and troubleshoot it like a pro.

Step 4: Stage Service — Smooth Movement in X & Y

Your microscope’s stage should move like silk—and for that, we’ve got Michael. He disassembles, cleans, rebuilds, and re-greases every coaxial stage. Ball bearings are serviced and controls are tuned to perfection.

When Michael’s done with a stage, you’ll feel the difference immediately.

Step 5: Cleaning the Eyepieces and Objectives

Dirty eyepieces are often the culprit behind shadows or floaters in the image. We clean both the front and back sides—especially the rear optics, which are commonly overlooked.

We also inspect every objective lens—cleaning both ends and rejecting any that have scratches or defects. Optics are everything. We take no shortcuts here.

Step 6: The Optical Path, Condenser, and Nosepiece

Next, we check the entire optical pathway:

Field diaphragms open and close smoothly

Condenser diaphragms move freely and are scratch-free

The nosepiece is cleaned, re-greased, and clicks into place at each indent (indentation) with satisfying precision

Step 7: Brand-Matched Builds for Peak Performance

We believe in matching parts by manufacturer. If you're getting an Olympus scope, you're getting Olympus optics, stage, condenser, and nosepiece. That keeps your system fully aligned and gives you the best image quality possible.

Mismatched parts might be functional, but they’ll never be optimal—and that’s not how we do things at Munday Scientific.

The Team Effort That Makes It All Happen

While each team member has their specialty, it’s truly a collaborative process.

Alex, Brandon, Walker, and Cody are our utility players—they chip in across every stage of the rebuild process, from optics to mechanical work.

They’re constantly learning, assisting, and refining their craft.

Every scope is touched by multiple skilled hands before it leaves our shop.

We also set aside dedicated time each month for continuing education—we’ve even held full-day rebuild classes on things like Olympus polarizing stages, so our techs stay sharp.

Final QC + The Extras

Before a microscope is packed, we give it one final inspection. Then we:

Shoot a video of your specific microscope being disassembled and reassembled

Include that video link so you can confidently set it up

Pack it with two extra bulbs (for halogen scopes), a dust cover, and line cord

Back it with a 1- or 2-year warranty, depending on make and model

Why Refurbished Is the Smarter Buy

Buying refurbished doesn’t mean sacrificing quality—it means making a smarter decision:

Save up to 50% off the cost of a new microscope

Lead times are way shorter—get your scope in weeks, not months

It’s eco-friendly, keeping excellent lab equipment out of landfills

You get full support from a real team that knows these scopes inside and out
