Olympus BX45 vs BX46 for Pathology & Mohs Surgery

Olympus BX45 vs BX46 for Pathology & Mohs Surgery

Olympus BX45 vs BX46: What’s the Difference?

At Munday Scientific & Microscope Marketplace, one of the most common questions we get from pathologists, Mohs surgeons, and laboratory professionals is:

“What’s the difference between the Olympus BX45 and the Olympus BX46?”

The truth is — these microscopes are extremely similar. Both are excellent clinical microscope platforms that offer great optics, ergonomic designs, and compatibility with many of the same Olympus accessories. In the video embedded below, Chad Potts walks through both microscopes side-by-side to explain the key differences, similarities, serviceability, and why we slightly prefer one over the other.

The Biggest Difference: Light Source & Frame Design

The most noticeable difference between the Olympus BX45 and the Olympus BX46 is the illumination system and overall frame aesthetics.

The BX46 comes standard with LED illumination from the factory, giving it cooler operation, lower maintenance, and longer bulb life.

The BX45 originally came with halogen illumination, although many units today have been upgraded to LED systems. In our opinion, the BX45 still performs exceptionally well with either lighting setup.

Cosmetically, the BX46 has a slightly more modern appearance, but internally and functionally, the two microscopes remain very close relatives.

Shared Accessories & Compatibility

One of the great things about both microscope systems is the amount of accessory compatibility they share.

The BX45 and BX46 can both utilize many of the same:

  • Observation heads

  • Objectives

  • Nosepieces

  • Mechanical stages

  • Eyepieces

  • Condensers and phase accessories (depending on configuration)

This makes upgrading or configuring systems relatively straightforward for laboratories already familiar with Olympus BX platforms.

Why We Slightly Prefer the BX45

Even though the BX45 is technically the older microscope, we actually give it a slight edge for several reasons.

First, the BX45 is usually more affordable while still offering excellent optical performance for pathology and Mohs applications.

Second, the BX45 frame contains slightly more metal and aluminum construction with less plastic compared to the BX46. While both scopes are durable, we appreciate the robust feel of the BX45.

Third — and probably most important from a service standpoint — the BX45 is a little easier to work on.

The BX45 features a removable condenser turret assembly, which makes service and upgrades easier. This is especially useful when adding phase contrast rings or servicing condenser components.

On the BX46, the condenser system is more integrated into the frame and non-removable, which can make service work more challenging.

What About Fluorescence?

This is an important note for buyers considering future upgrades.

Neither the BX45 nor the BX46 can properly accept an original Olympus fluorescence illuminator setup in the way other BX series frames can.

If fluorescence capability is required, aftermarket solutions are typically necessary.

For customers specifically planning fluorescence applications, we usually recommend looking at the Olympus BX41 or Olympus BX43 instead, as those systems are generally better suited for fluorescence configurations and future expansion.

Excellent Options for Pathology & Mohs

Both the BX45 and BX46 remain outstanding microscope choices for:

  • Pathology

  • Mohs surgery

  • Histology

  • Cytology

  • Clinical laboratory environments

They provide excellent ergonomics, strong optical performance, and dependable reliability in busy daily-use environments.

At the end of the day, you really cannot go wrong with either microscope. The differences are relatively minor, and both systems perform extremely well in clinical applications.

That said, if we had to choose one, the BX45 slightly edges out the BX46 for us because of its affordability, serviceability, and rugged construction.
