A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Munday Scientific & Microscope Marketplace
Ever wonder what goes into refurbishing a microscope? It’s more than just dusting it off and plugging it in.
We just released a video that pulls back the curtain on our process—check it out here 👉 Watch on YouTube
In the video, Chad Potts (Vice President & Partner at Munday Scientific and Microscope Marketplace) gives you a quick tour of our shop while two of our all-star techs, Scott Munday (Founder) and Danny Duncan (Head Technician), are hard at work doing what they do best: bringing microscopes back to life.
With a combined 100+ years of experience in the microscope industry, our team of Olympus and Nikon factory-trained technicians knows what it takes to deliver quality, precision, and performance in every instrument.
So... what actually happens during a microscope refurbishment?
🧼 1. Complete Cleaning & Decontamination
The process starts with a deep clean. Every microscope is fully disassembled and decontaminated. We’re not just wiping down surfaces—we’re getting into every crevice to ensure your instrument is hygienic and safe for the lab.
⚙️ 2. Rebuilding and Re-Greasing the Stage
One of the most-used parts of the microscope is the stage, and they do wear out. We remove all old, dried grease and rebuild the stage with fresh lubrication. The result? Smooth, precise movement that feels like a brand-new scope.
👁️ 3. Aligning & Cleaning the Binocular Head
We inspect the binocular viewing head for alignment and collimation (aka making sure your eyes are seeing one crisp, clean image). Then, we carefully clean all prisms and glass inside for maximum clarity.
💡 4. Light Source & Electronics Check
Lighting is essential in microscopy. Whether it’s halogen or LED, we check the brightness, color temperature, and intensity. We test the entire circuit—and when needed, we upgrade older lights to high-efficiency LED systems.
🔍 5. Cleaning & Verifying Optical Surfaces
Every optical component is cleaned and examined—objectives, eyepieces, condenser, and internal lenses. We make sure each one meets performance standards, giving you sharp, clean visuals for any application.
🔧 6. Rebuilding the Focus Mechanism
The fine and coarse focus systems are often gunked up from years of use. We completely disassemble and re-lubricate the internal gears and shafts. When we're done, it’s smooth sailing (or smooth focusing) from here on out.
🧪 7. Final Testing and Calibration
Once reassembled, each microscope is calibrated to factory specifications. We run a series of internal checks to make sure it meets our standards before it ever goes into a box.

Has the stage been rebuilt and re-greased?
-
Were the optics professionally cleaned and aligned?
-
Is the focus mechanism smooth and serviced?
-
Is the lighting system tested and modernized?
