Stop! Don’t Touch Your Microscope Until You Read This Guide (Maintenance)

Microscope Maintenance Tips for Longevity: Keep Your Equipment in Peak Condition

Investing in a high-quality microscope—especially a refurbished Olympus or Nikon model from Microscope Marketplace—is a smart move. But like any precision instrument, your microscope needs regular care to ensure accurate results, long-term performance, and to avoid costly repairs down the line.

Whether you're a pathologist, research scientist, biology instructor, or IVF specialist, proper maintenance will extend the life of your microscope and protect your investment. Here’s how to take care of your scope the right way.

1. Use a Dust Cover When Not in Use

This is the simplest and most effective way to keep your microscope clean. Dust can easily build up on optics, stage controls, and focus mechanisms, leading to blurred images and mechanical wear. Always cover your microscope with a fitted dust cover when not in use—especially overnight or during extended periods of inactivity.

At Microscope Marketplace, we ship all of our refurbished microscopes with a dust cover included. If you don’t have one, it’s a small investment that pays off big.

2. Clean the Objective Lenses with Care

The 40x objective is one of the most frequently used—and also the most vulnerable to damage due to its close proximity to the slide. Proper cleaning is essential for maintaining clarity and avoiding costly replacements.

We highly recommend watching this short demonstration video by Chad Potts, where he walks through the safe and effective process for cleaning your 40x objective:

🎥 How to Clean the 40x Microscope Objective

Key tips from the video:

  • Use a Q-tip lightly moistened with lens cleaner (never apply liquid directly to the lens).

  • Gently wipe in small circular motions, being careful not to press too hard.

  • Follow up with a dry Q-tip to remove any remaining moisture or streaks.

  • Use lens paper or microfiber cloth only if you’re experienced—many scratches happen with improper wiping.

This same method can be used to clean your 4x,10x, 20x, and 100x objectives as well. Just remember, if you’ve been using oil immersion on your 100x lens, be sure to clean it immediately after use. Leftover oil can damage lens coatings and degrade image quality over time.

3. Schedule Regular Maintenance and Calibrations

Just like a certified pre-owned car, your microscope will benefit from periodic tune-ups. At Munday Scientific and Microscope Marketplace, we recommend:

  • Annual preventive maintenance (especially in high-use labs)

  • Stage and focus adjustments

  • Alignment and cleaning of condenser and field diaphragms

  • Fluorescence filter cube inspection (if applicable)

  • Checking for mold or haze in optics

If you purchased your microscope from us, you already have a head start—each scope undergoes a full refurbishment and alignment before leaving our facility, and most include a 2-year warranty for peace of mind.

4. Keep a Cleaning Kit Nearby

A basic cleaning kit should include:

  • Lens paper or microfiber cloth

  • Lens cleaning solution (alcohol-free)

  • Canned air (for light dust removal)

  • Small brush (for stage and focus knobs)

Clean around the stage and eyepieces weekly, or more often in high-dust or high-traffic environments.

5. Don’t Forget the Light Source

If you're using halogen bulbs, check regularly for dimming or flickering and replace as needed. If you’ve upgraded to LED (many of our systems come LED-converted), you're in good shape—LEDs last significantly longer and require little maintenance. For fluorescence users, keep an eye on the lifespan of your mercury or metal halide lamps.

Bonus Tip: Keep a Log

Larger labs often keep a maintenance log noting dates of cleaning, bulb changes, service visits, and lens replacements. It’s a small habit that helps with warranty support, troubleshooting, and resale value.
