While the BX43 and BX46 are the newer platforms, don't overlook the BX41 and BX45. These microscopes are still amazing systems, and when properly refurbished, they can provide years of dependable service at a fraction of the cost of purchasing new equipment.
Olympus BX43: A Great All-Around Pathology Microscope
The Olympus BX43 is one of our favorite choices for a modern pathology laboratory.
It combines Olympus UIS2 optics with factory LED illumination and offers tremendous flexibility when configuring a microscope around a pathologist's particular workflow.
The BX43 can be configured with different observation heads, nosepieces, stages, condensers, objectives, camera systems, and other accessories.
One of the biggest advantages is its factory LED illumination, giving the user consistent illumination without having to worry about changing traditional halogen bulbs.
The BX43 is an excellent option for pathology, histology, cytology, Mohs surgery, veterinary pathology, teaching, and digital imaging.
For a laboratory that wants a newer Olympus platform with plenty of configuration possibilities, the BX43 is hard to beat.
Olympus BX46: Built for Routine Clinical Pathology
The Olympus BX46 is another excellent choice, especially for a pathologist spending long hours reviewing slides.
One of the distinguishing characteristics of the BX46 is its fixed low-stage design. Instead of moving the stage vertically to focus, the microscope uses nosepiece focusing. This allows the stage to remain at a comfortable height.
The BX46 also features factory LED illumination and can be configured with ergonomic observation heads.
For a busy pathology or clinical laboratory primarily performing routine brightfield microscopy, the BX46 is a fantastic system.
We especially like the BX46 for laboratories where ergonomics and straightforward routine slide examination are priorities.
Don't Overlook the Olympus BX41
Here's where things get interesting.
The Olympus BX41 may be an older platform, but we still consider it one of the best microscopes Olympus ever produced.
We continue to refurbish and sell BX41 microscopes because they are rugged, serviceable, versatile, and optically excellent.

But Isn't the BX41 Halogen?
Yes—and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Many pathologists still like the appearance of traditional halogen illumination. But if you want the benefits of LED illumination, the BX41 can easily be upgraded to LED.
We routinely install LED upgrades on BX41 microscopes.
That means you can purchase a high-quality refurbished BX41, convert it to LED, and end up with an incredibly capable pathology microscope without having to purchase a brand-new system.
You get the proven mechanics and serviceability of the BX41 with the convenience of modern LED illumination.
That's one reason the BX41 continues to be one of our favorite microscope platforms.
Olympus BX45: Another Outstanding Value
The Olympus BX45 deserves exactly the same consideration.
It was specifically designed with clinical users in mind and remains an outstanding pathology microscope.
The BX45 provides a comfortable low-stage design and can be configured with ergonomic heads and different objective combinations depending on the application.
A common pathology configuration might include:
2X • 4X • 10X • 20X • 40X
combined with widefield eyepieces and an ergonomic tilting head.
Like the BX41, the BX45 originally uses halogen illumination.
And once again, if you want LED, that's an easy upgrade.
A professionally refurbished BX45 with an LED conversion gives a pathology lab an excellent combination of ergonomics, optical performance, reliability, and value.
We've seen these microscopes continue to perform beautifully after years of daily laboratory use.
BX43/BX46 vs. BX41/BX45: Which Should You Buy?
There isn't one answer for every pathology laboratory.
If you want a newer-generation microscope with factory LED illumination, the BX43 and BX46 are excellent choices. The BX43 offers tremendous versatility, while the BX46 is particularly attractive for routine clinical pathology and ergonomic use.
But if value is important, we strongly recommend considering a refurbished BX41 or BX45.
The optical quality remains excellent, the microscopes are extremely well built, and both can easily be upgraded from their original halogen illumination to LED.
In many cases, we'd rather see a customer purchase a properly refurbished BX41 or BX45 with excellent objectives and the right accessories than spend significantly more simply to have a newer microscope frame.
Refurbished Doesn't Mean Second Best
This is something we talk about with customers all the time.
A professional laboratory microscope isn't like a laptop or cell phone that becomes obsolete simply because a newer model comes out.
Quality microscope frames, objectives, and optical components can remain useful for decades when properly maintained.
The important question isn't simply:
"How old is the microscope?"
It's:
"What condition is the microscope in, how was it refurbished, and is it properly configured for my application?"
That's a huge distinction.
A BX41 or BX45 that has been professionally cleaned, serviced, aligned, and configured with quality Olympus objectives can be an outstanding pathology workstation.
