This past week, we had the opportunity to help out a graduate student with a tricky repair on a Nikon Ti inverted microscope.

On September 24, 2025, we received an email from Kai-Chun Yang, a PhD student in the Thomas Lord Department of Mechanical Engineering and Material Sciences. He explained that the focus adjustment wheel on their Ti microscope was no longer working properly.


Step 1: On-Site Evaluation

We quickly scheduled a visit for the following week. Technician Chad traveled to evaluate the system and found that the microscope hadn’t been serviced in several years.

After examining the focus, it became clear that the Z-drive had been forced beyond its stop points. This caused the stop sets on both focus blocks to bend, which in turn let the block travel past its intended range. That movement created internal damage to the focus mechanism.

At that point, it was clear the microscope needed to be transported back to our Sanford facility for repair.


Step 2: The Overhaul

Back at the shop, Chad worked alongside head technician Danny Duncan. Both are Nikon- and Olympus-authorized service technicians, and this job called for every bit of their expertise.

The Z-block and focus mechanism were removed—a process that involved what felt like a thousand screws and nearly nine hours of hands-on work. Bent stop pins were replaced, components were realigned, and the mechanism was rebuilt from the ground up.

By the end of the process, the focus was moving smoothly again, and the microscope was fully restored to service condition.


Step 3: Fast Turnaround

Because the lab was only a 45-minute drive away, we were able to turn this repair around in just two business days. For labs that face downtime during service, Munday Scientific also offers loaner microscopes to keep research moving forward.
